Marking a century since its establishment, Athletic Bilbao traces its origins back to 1898, when learners from the Gymnasium Zamacois created the club. The organization was christened Athletic Club, adopting the English version of the word. During 1901, representatives convened at Café García to formalize the club's governance structure through the adoption of official statutes and procedures.
