The mining heritage defines the character of football clubs throughout the Ruhr region - and following the shutdown of Germany's final hard coal mine in Bottrop on December 21, 2018, Borussia Dortmund paid tribute to the miners through a dedicated initiative: the squad appeared in their home kit against Borussia Mönchengladbach displaying 'Danke Kumpel!' (Thank you, buddy!) emblazoned across the chest.
