The legendary Welsh forward Ian Rush was celebrated at Anfield with a testimonial match that generated record gate receipts for the club, totalling approximately UKP500,000. A turnout of 25,856 supporters attended the event honouring the 33-year-old striker, who has become synonymous with Liverpool's red shirt throughout the preceding quarter century and stands as the club's finest goal scorer. Liverpool established a commanding three-goal lead by the break through efforts by Stig Bjornebye, Steve McManaman and an own goal credited to Mark McNally, with additional second-half goals from Phil Babb and Neil Ruddock extending their advantage against Celtic. The Reds' lineup that evening consisted of: David James (#1), Steve Harkness (#2), Stig Bjornebye (#3), John Scales (#4), Phil Babb (#5), Neil Ruddock (#6), Nigel Clough (#8), Ian Rush (#9), Michael Thomas (#10), Robbie Fowler (#11) and Steve McManaman (#12). Kenny Daglish (#7) and Mark Walters (#15) were among the substitutes utilised during the match.
