Puma has released a throwback shirt for Borussia Mönchengladbach as part of its King line, drawing directly from the club's kit aesthetic of the 1980s and early 1990s. No sponsor on the front. Polo collar. Pinstripes. It is the kind of release that does not try too hard to explain itself.
The design
The shirt is white with black and green vertical pinstripes running across the body. The collar is a black fold-over polo, the kind that defined Bundesliga kits in the late 1980s, sitting cleanly against the white base. On the right chest, the standard Puma cat is replaced by the Puma King wordmark. "BORUSSIA" runs across the chest in a stark black retro block typeface. The club's diamond crest sits on the left in a vintage green.
The sleeves are drop-shoulder with green patterned taping. On the back, a large stylised block number 10 runs as a design element. No shirt sponsor appears anywhere on the front. The fabric is a double piqué weave, 100% polyester, made entirely from recycled materials. The fit is relaxed rather than athletic.
The background
The King line is Puma's archive-inspired range, built around the heritage of the King boot and the brand's broader football history. Applied to shirts, it means period-correct details: polo collars, pinstripes, heavier fabric, and restrained branding. Mönchengladbach is an obvious fit. The club's late 1980s kits, worn during a period of domestic competition and European presence, have strong collector recognition.
The shirt is priced at €79.95 and is available directly through Puma.
