Ecuador deployed this extended-arm shirt in their pivotal final match of the Spain 1982 CONMEBOL WC Qualifiers, away to Chile at Santiago National Stadium. Victory would have represented a genuine opportunity to secure their maiden World Cup finals appearance. Unfortunately, the match ended in a 2-0 defeat, denying them the group's top position. Furthermore, this jersey marked the conclusion of the blue-sash kits period for the squad. The design would not reappear until the 2016 Copa America home strip.
