Germany wore this shirt while winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. They also wore it while beating Portugal 4-0, Brazil 7-1 and Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the final. It was the away kit that travelled with them across six weeks and four cities, and now adidas has brought it back.
The design
The base is the same black and red horizontal stripe pattern that made the original one of the more striking Germany away kits of the modern era. The stripes run across the full width of the shirt, with tonal striping within the red hoops adding depth to the fabric. The construction is jacquard.
The collar is a black stand collar with a two-button placket. The DFB crest sits on the left chest in monochrome, with three stars above it. The adidas logo is silver embroidery. The three stripes on the shoulders are also silver. Below the rear collar, the text reads: Die Nationalmannschaft. Side panel inserts are dark and tonal. The fit is slim.
The original
Germany used this shirt as their change kit throughout the tournament in Brazil. It was worn in the group stage against Portugal and the United States, and again in the knockout rounds when the home white was not required. The most significant match played in it was the semi-final against Brazil, which ended 7-1 and is the largest margin of victory in a World Cup semi-final.
Mario Götze scored the winning goal in the final wearing the white home kit. But the black away shirt is the one that carried the team through most of the tournament, and for collectors it has always been the more interesting of the two 2014 designs.
The reissue maintains the stripe pattern and the original detailing while updating the fabric for contemporary wear. It is available through adidas and selected retailers.
